Finland’s Frontier Guard considers it probable that a Russian helicopter violated Finnish airspace over the south-eastern border village of Kontu on Monday afternoon.

The Frontier Guard took statements from eyewitnesses on Tuesday and compared their accounts with radar recordings.

A Russian border official has confirmed that a Russian Border Guard Service Mi-8 helicopter was on a surveillance flight along the border between the two countries at the time that the airspace violation is suspected to have taken place.

The helicopter is thought to have flown no more than a couple of kilometres across the border and was in Finnish airspace for only a few minutes.

According to Finland’s Frontier Guard, final confirmation of the violation will be forthcoming within the next few days.

The incident is the third possible helicopter violation along the south-eastern border this year.
